Although the BIM methodology can improve the decision-making process of building projects, many professionals are still limited to using BIM-based tools to generate virtual models for geometric representation and rendering. Several BIM application possibilities are still not widespread in the market. BIM is advantageous in centralizing all data in the same three-dimensional model, allowing different analyses and simulations to be carried out. This will enable professionals, for example, to accurately assess the costs associated with the construction during the design phase of the project, which ensures the minimization of economic impacts. Besides, it can guarantee the development of more sustainable buildings, with optimized thermal, acoustic and lighting performances, and with conscious consumption of energy and water. To obtain a certificate of completion for EIT’s Professional Certificate of Competency course, students must achieve a 65% attendance rate at the live, online fortnightly webinars. Detailed summaries or notes can be submitted in lieu of attendance. In addition, students must obtain a mark of 60% in the set assignments which could take the form of written assignments and practical assignments. Students must also obtain a mark of 100% in quizzes. If a student does not achieve the required score, they will be given an opportunity to resubmit the assignment to obtain the required score.

Karoline Figueiredo holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, both from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil. She was a Visiting Researcher at Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Spain, in 2017 and at Western Sydney University, Australia, in 2018, and in both situations, she developed research in the life cycle assessment of construction materials. She is currently a doctoral candidate, and her research focuses on improving the selection of construction materials to generate fewer environmental, social, and economic impacts.
She has expertise in Sustainable Construction and has developed projects based on Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA). One of her most recent works involves the development of a BIM-based platform for optimising the construction material choice using LCSA and Fuzzy logic. She is a lecturer in a postgraduate course in UFRJ, responsible for planning and coordinating a unit about BIM, and a lecturer in the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT). Also, she has worked as a guest professor at Universidad de Santiago de Chile.

You are expected to spend approximately 5-8 hours per week learning the course content. This includes attending fortnightly webinars that run for about 90 minutes to facilitate class discussion and allow you to ask questions. This program has a 65% attendance requirement in the live webinars in order to graduate from the program. If you are unable to attend the live webinars, you have the option of watching the recording of completed webinars and sending a summary of what you have learnt from the webinar to the Learning Support officer. The summaries go towards your attendance requirement for the program.
This program is run online on an intensive part-time basis and has been designed to fit around full-time work. It will take three months to complete.
